Croatia is poor in natural resources, including coal - it has no actual coalmines now; however few small deposits exist in the country. At the Communist era these deposits produced about 120 ktpa of lignite and sub-bituminous steam coal.
Most of the country's thermal power plants utilize fuel oil and natural gas, while coal-fired plants provide only 13% of energy. Due to a low share of coal in energy production the steam coal import counts for 800 ktpa.
Croatia also imports about 600 ktpa of coking coal - to supply the country's coke-chemical plant.
